Find a Way to Add Value
The great philosopher Eminem once said, “You only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow!” It’s true. We only get one life. This is my opportunity to do whatever it is that I feel like I’m supposed to do. Some people want to get money. Some people want to be famous. Me? I want to connect with as many people on a deep level as possible while providing a level of love and hope that those people don’t receive very often.
I’m not necessarily anybody special. I just believe that every person is born with purpose. I believe everyone has potential. So my goal is to live a life worthy of the message I preach. I mean, people call me “Preacher Sam.” There is positive and negative that automatically comes with that. I mean, I’m not even at the same place I was when I got that nickname. However, people have been calling me some version of that nickname since I was in high school.
So that’s me, but I want to know about you. What’s your message to the world? Do you want to give something awesome to this world, or do you just want to get yours and then get out?
I guess it depends on what you believe. But here’s the thing- no matter what you believe to be true, legacy is a fact of life that will definitely happen. This is so true- especially now. If you’re reading this, you have the Internet, and I’m willing to bet you’re on some form of social media. That means there is some form of your identity out there for the whole world to see and see forever. Your grandchildren will watch your Instagram clips 40 years from now through some crazy contact lenses. People will be able to know who you were (or at least what you portrayed as your identity). So I ask again- what message do you want the world to hear coming from your life?
We were made for relationships. So I take connecting very seriously. When I connect with someone, I want that relationship to be more than surface level. I want to know their struggles and their successes. I want to know how they view things, and I want to have healthy dialogue when they see the world differently than I do. I want to add value to them. What do I mean by that? I simply want to help them be the best version of themselves, and my presence in their life needs to be amplifying that potential. If it is not doing that, I’m a bad friend or business partner or employee or whatever.
Be a light in dark places. That is a phrase that has huge implications as far as my faith is concerned, but one could be completely non-religious and recognize what that means. Do good. In a world of hopelessness and messed up mindsets, do something awesome for people. There is such a lack of good in our society, and yet the same society is just pumping that we all need to strive for greatness. If you’re not doing good for people, you’ll never truly be great. That’s what adding value really looks like.
I’m so unashamed to rep people I believe in. As soon as I met the guys from Caffeine and Kilos, I knew I wanted to rep for them as much as I possible could. I may not have the biggest Twitter or Instagram following, but please believe that there is a ton of C&K being pumped in my posts. I do that for the ones I believe in because they deserve it. I do it because I’ve connected with them.
If you are reading this, you are influential. Whether it’s in the gym, at work, or at home with your family- you are impacting people all the time. Be aware of the implications there. It can be cliché, but when Uncle Ben told Peter Parker, “Great power comes with great responsibility” he wasn’t lying. It may come from a comic book, but it is so true. Not only do you have purpose and potential, but you also have power- even if you don’t perceive it. So use to build others and be a positive influence.
